Work Experience
Since June 2016, I have been the enterprise editor at POLITICO’s European edition, where I am responsible for special projects, the front-page of the weekly newspaper, and the Forum and Opinion sections online and in print.
Before that I spent 15 years writing for magazines, starting in 2001, when I moved to Lagos, Nigeria, as a freelance journalist. Since then, I lived in Istanbul, Nairobi, Beijing, and Rome, and reported from every continent except Antarctica. My stories appeared on the covers of The Atlantic, Bloomberg Businessweek, Fortune Magazine, and Time Magazine. I have also published articles in Foreign Policy, The New York Times Magazine, and The New Yorker.
In 2014, I became an Associate Editor at Project Syndicate, where I edited op-eds by prominent political leaders, policymakers, scholars, business leaders, and civic activists. I also helped found Deca, a global collective of journalists producing longform non-fiction. In July of that year, Deca published my Kindle Single and short e-book, Homelands: The Case for Open Immigration. I am one of the collective’s administrators.
In December 2008, my book Forecast: The Consequences of Climate Change, from the Amazon to the Arctic, from Darfur to Napa Valley was published in the United States by Henry Holt and Company. It has since been published in Australia, Brazil, China, Taiwan, and Japan.
In 2003, I covered the invasion of Iraq for the New York Daily News as an unembedded reporter in the Kurdish north. I returned to Baghdad a year later for Time Magazine.
From July 2000 to March 2001, I covered the suburbs of Paterson, New Jersey, for the Herald News, a local daily.
From October 1997 to May 1999, I worked as a researcher with The University of Arizona’s Nuclear Medicine Research Group.
